Formed in the gallbladder or bile ducts of cattle from digestive fluids like bile pigments, calcium and cholesterol, gallstones are small round, oval or pyramidal crystalline masses. When dry, they look like pebbles (‘stones’). Their size depends on the age and diet of the host animal and the colour is typically golden yellow, dark brown or orange. Their quality is assessed according to size, colour and the state of conservation.

Gallstones are incredibly useful and valuable. Their mineral matter has therapeutic properties – Chinese alternative pharmacotherapies made from gallstones are believed to address everything from headaches to low spirits, sexual dysfunction, hepatitis, liver and heart diseases.
